Overview
For my Final Year Project I explored how players communicate with detective games and set out to create my own unique input system. Over the course of around 16 weeks I designed and created an interactive case board that is used to solve murders and a fully playable level to go along with it.
The system I created is unique, interactive and fun and in the future I plan on hopefully turning this small vertical slice into a commercial release.

During development the design was iterated on a lot over time. I went into the project knowing I wanted to create a diegetic case board that helped the player solve each murder, I just wasn't sure how it would function. I started with a version where the player would transition to the case board and move the evidence around with the cursor.
I wanted the system to be more immersive though, I felt the constant switching back and forth between the board and first person took the player out of the experience. I recreated the system to function fully in first person and allow the player to physically place or take evidence on or off the board at anytime..
The final system allows the player complete freedom while solving the murder cases, as long as the fates and murderers are connected up the player can use the board how ever they wish. The case board system is immersive and captures the exact feeling I was looking for, it makes the player feel like a detective.
